Meet Tony Whitecrow - Quicktime Video
When Tony Whitecrow has a pile of hides and fifty cents he feels rich. In a stack of deer skin hides Tony sees potential for the deer to live another life, on a different level. "To me, the deer is just as alive as if it were standing before me." Respect for the tradition shows in each of his hand-made, one of a kind pieces. The twisted fringe, which has become his trade mark, is cut and permanently set by hand, twisting each piece twice
"Following tradition takes extra time but the finished piece becomes wearable art that is not only fashionable, functional and durable, it is also authentic to the American West." Tony Whitecrow works with a clothes consultant out of Palm Beach and New York that travels to 26 cities a year from Maine to California. Tony Whitecrow shows and sells privately at the most exclusive homes in the USA, from the collections of top designers. Clientele include those in the entertainment and music industry.
All pieces are made by hand of the finest top grade deer skin hide. You may also create your own jacket or provide one to be customized. Most orders take from 2 to 4 weeks. The commercial deer hides can be cleaned with Woolite and cold water. Lay flat and block the piece as you would a fine sweater. Shake out when dry. The inks in the drawings by Andersen Kee are permanent and will not run.
Tony Whitecrow dreams of each of his pieces. "I see my self making the jacket from beginning to finish. The next morning I begin drawing the pattern. My hands know exactly what to do because they have already done it the night before. I will work for 18 hours straight, losing all track of time." "I guarantee each piece for life", Tony says with pride.
Tony also designs deer skin bedding and draperies for Cassandra Lohr Designs International out of Denver, Colorado. |
