The namesake of El Torreon Hacienda is the torreon just to the southeast of the hacienda itself. This magic little structure was built in 1820, or earlier. This torreon was one of many torreons then in Taos. These torreons formed a protective network against raiding Native American tribes. The torreons communicated through the use of smoke-signals when danger was present. The torreon is a fortress or "watchtower". In August 2001, this torreon was extensively restored and a new pathway for visitors was added.
